eye roll, groan, repeat.

I hate fashion week. Regardless of what city it's taking place in, count me OUT sirs and madams. Put down your pitchforks fellow designers, I'm all about creative expression & supporting new designers. But the 'scene' combined with the relentless name dropping & bragging is enough to keep my eyes firmly rolled into the back of my head for months. Though what really toasts my almonds is the forced feeding. I see your look of disbelief- of course I'm not talking about the emaciated models.. I'm referring to the rest of the world letting these designers think that we will gobble up whatever wacko trends they send down the runway. One word: flatforms. If you bought a pair, slap yourself in the face. Twice. Now once more so you don't forget it.

Of course some of the themes are things I can get behind.. high waists, peplums, mixing prints like you just went blind … or forgot to pay your electricity bill so you're literally getting dressed in the dark. But darlings.. I've been doing those things for a few years now. When you find some styles that fit an actual S, you stick with em. Yes even the prints-you mix enough of them and no one's gonna be looking at that food baby. But I refuse, I repeat, REFUSE to let these big names dictate what I can and cannot wear each season. That's the beauty of clothing kids.. it allows you to voice your personality without saying one damn word. With that kind of freedom, why do you want to be echoing what every other lady or gent who gives a lick about fashion is saying? Considering the disappointing lack of wit and enthusiasm for creative writing in fashion blogging, I sure wouldn't want those folks to be speaking for me.

As long as it's original, you let that freak flag fly kids.

I sent a thank you prayer out into the universe the first time I put on a high waisted garment. Finally having a piece of clothing that not only accentuated my "bubble butt" but my waist was an eye opening and life changing moment. No matter what I'm not giving em up! Ooh, and I agree ten fold with your statement about flatforms... wtf?!

YES. That is all.

Haha, love this. Flatforms can go to fashion hell.

Merl, I think I love you.

now that i know what FNO, flatforms and missoni mean... i can comment.

So i agree. i like what i like. i never got why you would let seasonal trends decide what you wear and when. it's so weird!!! plus theres a good chance it will not look as good on you as it does on that 6 foot 100lb model. as a self proclaimed midget, i often get fake ideas of what might look good on me.

then i take outfit pictures, burn them and that item of clothing and move on having learned my lesson.

i love you too.

S E R I O U S L Y. i think the part that really bites my ass is people not thinking for themselves. today is such a perfect example with the missoni/target hoopla. i love everyone lining up and waiting before the store opens to buy ALL THE SAME stuff so they can all run around looking like stripes puked all over them.

really, it just comes down to the fact that trends are easy - someone tells you what to wear, you go out and buy it and you're done. you look the same as everyone else, which is comfortable. im not necessarily the most interesting dresser, but i wont be looking back in six months asking myself why i dyed my hair ombre pink and ran around in those stupid clod-hopper Litas.

can i join the chorus of "i think i love you's" too? because i think i do. this post puts it well--creative expression and art, yes. endless consumerism, the pressure to "update," the tyranny of ill-fitting and stupid trends, the way street style gets absorbed thanklessly into the runway, the implicit demands for homogeneity that being "in style" requires, no thank you. you put it beautifully.

Hahahaha!!! You crack me up with your cynicism. I have yet to ever even consider wearing flatforms, leggings as pants, or even those god forsaken hammer pants. I like classic pretty vintage...really whatever the f*ck I want. Although I will gander at some of the pretties walking down the runway.

YES. I'm sure trends have a subtle influence over me in that it dictates what is available, but stop me if I ever run out to buy something because it's "trendy" or "in". Like flatforms (ick). I'm wearing a skirt today that I've had for probably the past 5 years, and I've worn it throughout all of them (even when the zipper broke and I neglected to fix it for a couple years). And it works, not because it's trendy, but because it's a style that suits me and my body. Love this post. Especially since this day and age in the internet helps to get independent emerging designers out there.

you are such a great writer, merl. i love hearing your thoughts on stuff like this. i'm not much for FW either. furthermore, i love you...adore you actually! ...but zoey is going to look really cute in those Missoni leggings. ;)

fuck yes!!!!!!! and not just because i love you. but because you say what we all want to say but either can't or won't. i love clothes and getting dressed and putting pics of that on the internets. i also like to look like i care. but i'm not gonna let a label tell me what to do or who to be this season or next. it's pretty, but it's a fantasy and i can handle that. me? i shop at thrift stores. that's reality.

So I had to google "flatforms" because I didn't know what in the Sam Hell you were talking about, I'm sad that I did.
I work in the fashion industry, and fashion week sends me over the edge. Like I literally want to run away and hide under a rock so I don't hear about it anymore. Case in point...I recently became part of the 4 eyed family. Age and relentless hours at a computer screen have caused my peepers to become blurred and I was given a prescription...damn. Now give me sunglasses and I can work it, specs? No fucken way. I finally found a pair that suited my face and made my husband whistle at the sight of them. I wore them to work and my boss says "oh, they are so narrow, why didn't you get cooler frames?" After mentally punching her in the face I explained; "I bought glasses that suited my face and that I can wear for a few years and not get sick of". The fashion industry is such an ugly place and Fashion week only highlights the reality of it. Stay as far away as you can...we should start "anti-fashion week"....hmmmm

Ugh... Fashion week. I'm so tired of all the buzz and so tired of seeing all the fucking tweets about it.

When given the option to take my free trip to NY (that I won out of pure luck) the weekend I did not choose was fashion week. Why? Because there are way too many people in town that I cannot honestly pretend I give two shits about them or their blog or their book deal or their ombre hair or their ugly shoes.

I vote we start a "I do what I want" week. Thank you for this Merl, I feel ya on all of it.

I do agree with some of what you say. Fashion is about the individual, and the ones who get recognition are the ones who stand out of the mass. Thus sometimes (even though I enjoy browsing through fashion shows and new collections), I wonder if there is a counter purpose to fashion week, such as to show people the herd so they don't follow it. Does that make sense? It's quite late at night, I guess!
As you say, as long as it's original! (I'll add classy, elegant and timeless).

Love,
S

I agree - couldn't have said it better myself. Sycophants and lovies fawning over each other, how much of that appreciation is real?

P.S. Like your blog! I also appreciate creative writing in fashion blogging and do a little myself.
